HIGHLAND – Bad Seed Cider, a 2011 startup, will open a tasting room in Brooklyn this month in conjunction with New York City Cider Week.

“We are the first company to take advantage of the (state’s) new farm cidery regulations, which allow us to open up to five different locations under our existing liquor license for our home farm,’’ said Bram Kincheloe, one of Bad Seed’s owners, via email.

Kincheloe said the Bad Seed Brooklyn Tap Room, at 585 Franklin Ave. in Crown Heights, will have 12 taps of the company’s ciders and eight taps of New York craft beers.

The tasting room will also sell bottle pours of New York wines and bottle sales of New York spirits in addition to growler fills of the ciders and beers on tap.

“(We) will highlight the best that the Hudson Valley and New York state has to offer,’’ Kincheloe said.

The tasting room, the first of its kind in Brooklyn, will open Oct. 20, just as New York City Cider Week kicks off.

The Oct. 20-29 event, organized by the New York Cider Association and Glynwood, is designed to introduce cider makers and their wares to consumers and retailers.

Cider-centric tastings, dinners and workshops will be held throughout the city. The schedule is posted at

Other mid-Hudson cideries participating in the event include Angry Orchard of Walden, Brooklyn Cider House of New Paltz, Doc’s Draft of Warwick, Graft Cider of Newburgh, Metal House Cider of Esopus, Orchard Hill Cider Mill of New Hampton, Pennings Cidery of Warwick and Westwind Orchard of Accord.

Bad Seed grows about 50 varieties of apples on 60 acres at its home farm, Wilklow Orchard, but the cidery generally uses only about four in each of its ciders.

Its flagship dry hard cider, which is now available in cans, relies heavily on Empire, a 1945 Cornell University introduction that is also popular for eating out of hand and cooking.
