The wait for Cyberpunk 2077 may have been long - the game was announced way back in 2012 - but CD Projekt RED has no intention of calling it one and done with the game's release in April next year. Much like the large expansions for The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 will be extended with chunky DLC.

"We are talking about expansions in the future," CD Projekt Red UI Coordinator Alvin Liu told Prima Games. "We want to make sure everything's complete, but we also want to build open worlds. I know when I was playing The Witcher 3 and I finished everything, I still want to know what everyone was up to. I think we're going to have opportunities like that as well for Cyberpunk 2077."

Liu didn't talk about how many expansions CD Projekt RED planned or whose stories they would continue, though, naturally, that would encroach on the story of the main game.

Naturally, whenever developers talk about post-launch plans for a game, some will assume this means there will be content cut from the game to include in these later releases but "We're not withholding content," Liu said. "We're not withholding story for the future to try to... sell it in pieces or anything like that. You're going to get the whole, full-value game here."

The Witcher 3's expansions were chunky extras for the main game, adding lots of new quests, characters, and locations to explore. However, more importantly, they made sense as expansions because they had a markedly different tone from the original game. Blood & Wine, for instance, explores chivalric knights and honour, something which is at odds with the dark, morally grey world of The Witcher. Hopefully Cyberpunk's expansions will be a similar shift in tone.
